Football - WRCFA Challenge Cup: Paul hands Ovenden quarter-final clash
PAUL Hand missed a "sitter" but made amends with an excellent 20-yard free-kick to take Ovenden West Riding through to the quarter finals with a 1-0 win at Robin Hood Athletic.
However, it was the end of the road for Brighouse Town who lost 4-3 on penalties at home to West Yorkshire League leaders Beeston St Anthonys after the pair had been locked together at 3-3 after extra time.
Ovenden were below par against modest opponents, struggling to string their passes together and giving Hood's Stefan Holt and James O'Donnell too much space in midfield.
Ovenden sprung to life after 35 minutes when good work by Steve Fullard and Ciaran Green set up Mick Palethorpe from 30 yards and his strike was tipped around an upright by Scott McCarthy.
Both sides had spasmodic attacks in the second half and Hand missed from two yards on 70 minutes before crashing the ball home 10 minutes later.
Brighouse started well against their visitors from Leeds but Beeston drew first blood with Town appealing in vain for offside.
Town were soon back on level terms when a great five man move resulted in a cross that captain Tom Wright steered home.
Beeston were pinned back in second half and the tie appeared to swing in Town's favour when a Beeston midfielder was given a straight red card for a head butt. But the 10-man visitors raised their game and five minutes later took the lead again.
With 20 minutes remaining Jason Tiplady came on and within two minutes had made it 2-2 from a corner .
Beeston missed a golden chance before extra time, in which a corner fell nicely to the ever reliable Glen Hall, who picked his spot from the edge of a crowded box to put Town in front for the first time.
Beeston threw caution to the wind and quickly made it 3-3 from the penalty spot, Town's own appeals for a spot kick falling on deaf ears.
In the shoot out, both sides missed their first penalties. After five each the score was 3-3, but Brighouse's sixth was pushed onto the bar and Beeston's next hit the back of the net.
