Former Deputy Mayor Eddie Toner, 79, dies

Former Deputy Mayor of Calderdale Eddie Toner has died aged 79.

Mr Toner was born in Halifax and grew up around Ovenden and Illingworth, attending St Joseph’s Primary and Junior School where he was head boy.

He received a scholarship for St Beads Grammar School in Bradford and studied at Halifax Technical College, joining the fire service aged 22 after his National Service.

In 1970 he received a commendation and medal of bravery from the council and he remained in the fire service until his retirement in 1987.

He stood as a Labour Party candidate in the early 1970s and was elected to represent the Illingworth Ward.

Eddie also had a passion for rugby league and was a supporter of the Halifax Rugby League team and always attended matches with his good luck flat cap in hand.

Eddie was husband of Doreen, father of Lynn, Catherine and Claire, father-in-law and friend to Andrew, Stephen and Philip, brother of the late Joan, uncle to nephews and nieces and grandfather to Lee, Marcus, Luke, Stephanie, Abigail, Christopher, Samuel and May.
