Former Halifax vicar Rev John Bunker

The funeral of John Bunker was held on Monday at St Augustine’s Church, Hanson Lane, Halifax.

Rev Bunker died on August 6 at the age of 81.

He trained as an architect in London before studying theology at King’s College.

In the 1950s he moved to the north-east to become curate at St John’s Church, Newcastle, where he met his wife, Marlene.

He took over as vicar of St Augustine’s in 1984 and was the chaplain to the then Mayor of Calderdale, Albert Berry, in 1988/89.

Rev Bunker is a former chairman of the governors at St Augustine’s Primary School and helped set up a successful mother and toddlers group and a drop-in centre.

He retired in July 1995.
