Glasshoughton Welfare 0 Brighouse Town 2: Quick-fire Burgess secures victory
BRIGHOUSE Town booked a home date with Yorkshire Amateur in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase following a gritty display at Glasshoughton on Saturday.
Boss Mark Brier had expected a tough test and that is exactly what his side received before winning through with a goal in each half.
The pitch was not conducive to good football which made life difficult for both sides. However, Brighouse's fitness told in the end as they grew stronger the longer the game went on and fully deserved their victory.
They did not have things their own way though, with Glasshoughton's lively young striker working the defence well and keeping keeper Lee Ashforth on his toes.
It took until shortly before the break for Brighouse to finally break the deadlock. Nicky Boshell worked a good position for himself only for a Glasshoughton defender to trip him in the box, Boshell himself stepping up to fire home from the spot.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Brighouse always holding the edge, Alex Hallam shaving a post, Nathan Cartman firing over and Danny Hull forcing a save from the keeper.
The visitors needed a second goal to make sure of the win and Lee Burgess provided it in the best possible manner.
Brier decided to change things around with tomorrow night's league game against Winterton Rangers on his mind.
He sent Burgess on and as he sprinted onto the pitch and towards the Glasshoughton area, Tom Thornton knocked the ball to him and after one bounce Burgess lashed into the top corner from 30 yards.
That proved the killer blow for Glasshoughton and Brighouse were able to play out time in what Brier described as a professional manner.
"I was absolutely delighted for Lee Burgess - it was a great strike," said Brier.
"He has not had the best of starts to the season having been fantastic for us last year.
"But that goal will have given him a tremendous amount of confidence.
"I said from the start that it would be a difficult game and it was certainly that.
"It was a war of attrition at times and full credit to Glasshoughton because those lads worked their socks off
"The pleasing thing is that our fitness levels are so good. We are able to come on strongly towards the end of each half and that made a big difference on Saturday.
"We have a home draw against Yorkshire Amateur in the next round which is a game we will all be looking forward to."
