Golf: Valley hosts county best
THE cream of the county's professional golfers will converge on Willow Valley next week to compete in the prestigious Yorkshire PGA Championship.
It is the seventh year that the well-appointed course, which sits alongside the M62 near Brighouse, has hosted the event. It looks likely to continue to do so until at least 2013.
Lindrick's long-serving John King will defend the title.
There is expected to be a strong challenge for a share of the 6,000 prize kitty from the likes of Aaron Wainwright (Mid-Yorkshire), Alex Belt (Bridlington Links) and John Wells (Cherry Burton).
The host club field six professionals, led by Julian Haworth, Darren Rands and Lee Shepherd.
David Astin, formerly of Hebden Bridge but now attached to Woodsome Hall, is another local name taking part along with Bradley Park's Jamie Coverley and Ryburn's Chris Thewlis.
The top 50 players from Wednesday's competition will qualify for the second round which takes place the following day.
