Mrs Pickles, 71, said: “We first spoke over the phone and he eventually asked me out.”

After getting married at Providence Church, Ovenden, they bought their first home on Illingworth Drive, Illingworth, where they lived for 36 years.

“If you have to work hard for something it helps to build a relationship,” she said.

The couple enjoyed trips around the country on 77-year-old Mr Pickles’s motorbike but he said their honeymoon to London was “a van trip, not a bike trip”.

They to Murcia, Spain, after Mr Pickles spent 48 years working at the post office.

Though they moved abroad for the weather, Mr Pickles was optimistic about being back in Britain staying at daughter Andrea’s house, despite the rain.

“It was nice for a week,” he said.

Mr and Mrs Pickles have two daughters, a son in law and three grandchildren and will be finishing their celebrations with a party tomorrow.
