A great-grandfather from Halifax is among a number of cancer patients featuring in a new ad campaign for Cander Research UK.

John Anderson is one of the stars of a new ground-breaking Cancer Research UK television advertising campaign ‘Right Now’ and shows the reality of cancer for patients

The powerful films – which show real patients in real-life moments – are a call for everyone to take action in the battle against cancer.

Mr Anderson, 69, featured in the first of a series of adverts being broadcast which sees him waiting pensively with his daughter for the results of surgery for skin cancer.

John’s partner Freda had spotted a bleeding mole on his back in June last year. Tests revealed it was malignant and John underwent surgery at Leeds Cancer Hospital to remove the mole and lymph nodes from under his arm before being told he was clear of cancer.

“There was a little bit of a tear in my eye when I knew I was safe. But it was a great feeling.

“Freda and I celebrated with some champagne,” said John. “I hope people watching me in the ad will be reminded to take extra care in the sun and to get any unusual moles checked out as soon as possible... I owe everything to Freda – she saved my life.”

Nicki Embleton, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Yorkshire, said: “Every hour, around 78 people are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire.

“Our campaign shows that research is working – people like John and Toby are getting their lives back.”
