AN animal expert searching for a stray deer caused panic when he turned up outside a Calderdale school with a rifle.
Passers-by called police when they saw the man in Burnley Road, outside Todmorden High School.
It emerged that he was trying to tranqualise a deer trapped in a storm drain.
Steph Booth, who was driving past, said she saw the man and feared for the worst.
“It looked like he was carrying a shotgun,” she said.
“So I rang the police, expecting them to send a firearms squad.
“I was frightened until I found out later that he was on a rescue mission,” she said.
A police spokesman said the man had been given some words of advice.
