AFTER 10 years without a single cinema screen in Halifax, in just a few short weeks filmgoers should have a choice of 10.

The new Vue Cinema at Broad Street looks set to open in mid-October, which is about the same time as the nearby 100-bedroomed Premier Inn hotel.

The last commercial cinema in Halifax - the ABC, at Ward’s End - closed in June 2002, with the screening of “Spiderman”.

The building was then converted into a night club.

Vue Cinema has yet to announce its blockbusting opening feature but a spokeswoman for the Broad Street Plaza development said: “The cinema opening is likely to be mid-October and I hope to have more precise details soon.”

Meanwhile, about 500 people turned up this week to a recruitment fair in the hope of landing jobs at the Premier Inn and Beefeater restaurant, which are also due to open at Broad Street in mid-October.

Two pub restaurants employing a total of more than 150 staff are also getting ready to open in the Plaza.

TGI Friday’s is recruiting up to 120 people to work at its restaurant which is scheduled to open on August 31.

The owners of the Harvester pub are recruting 50 staff and hope to open at about the same time.

Also part of the £40 million Plaza complex will be a Pure Gym, eateries such as Frankie & Benny’s, Pizza Express, Nando’s and J. D. Wetherspoon’s. NHS Calderdale is setting up a health centre to replace the nearby Laura Mitchell Clinic and Calderdale Council is taking space for a customer services office to replace the facilities at Northgate House. There is also a 400-space multi-storey car park.

*The Vue brand was launched in 2003 with 38 cinemas.
Since then, its UK operation has grown to 68 with more than 3,000 employees serving more than 35 million cinema goers every year.

Its auditoriums are fully equipped with the latest projection and audiovisual technologies.
According to the company: “We always take an innovative approach and continuously look for ways to improve what we do.
“Our goal is to deliver an unrivalled cinema experience for all of our customers with outstanding service provided by friendly and helpful people.

“Due to the trading patterns we offer a variety of part time or full time contracts that allow our team members to work flexibly.”
