Halifax RLFC v Leigh Centurions: Govin ready for action
MICK Govin has highlighted the importance of tomorrow night's Championship showdown with hometown club Leigh at the Shay (8.0) - for Halifax and himself.
Fax need three points to banish memories of back-to-back losses against Widnes and Gateshead and bolster their position at the top of the league ladder.
And Govin, the injury-jinxed playmaker who is on the comeback trail again after a knee problem, is aiming to secure a new deal with Fax for 2010.
While Matt Calland has already tied key creative quartet Sean Penkywicz, Bob Beswick, Ben Black and Mark Gleeson to the club for another two years, Govin is still waiting for an offer.
"I don't know what's happening about next year, I've not been approached yet," said Govin, who started at half back in last weekend's 34-28 reverse at the International Stadium.
"I was hoping to make a statement on the field last weekend, but it never happened.
"I was very disappointed with my own performance, but I want to stay here so I need to pick myself up for tomorrow night if I am selected.
"My injuries are going to be an issue, they were last year and the year before.
"But they gave me another chance and I have played a lot more games already this season than I have done before.
"I need to get match fit now, kick on and concentrate on earning myself a contract."
Govin's priority remains Fax's collective title challenge though, with another victory against Paul Rowley's side - they were dumped out of the Northern Rail Cup at the Shay three weeks ago - crucial to their aspirations.
"It's a must win game for us," said Govin.
"We feel we should have won against Widnes and Gateshead and we can't afford to slip up again.
"If we want to win this league, we need to start playing how we can do."
Wakefield stand-off Jamie Rooney has joined Co-operative Championship side Barrow on loan until the end of the season.
