Halifax Town v Stevenage Borough: Town on a high for last match
TOWN'S thumping win at Crawley will be a massive boost for the side when they take on Stevenage in the final game of the season at the Shay today.
That's the view of midfielder Tom Kearney as the Shaymen look to complete their escape from relegation.
Not too long ago, Halifax looked safe, but the 10-point deduction after they went into administration threatened to derail the club.
The 6-1 home defeat to Kidderminster had the alarm bells ringing even louder.
But since then performances have improved and they have picked up eight points from a possible 15.
And things finally fell into place at the Broadfield Stadium where Jon Shaw and Lewis Killeen were back among the goals.
"Mathematically it would have been nice to have gone into today's game safe," said Kearney.
"But to go into it after winning 4-0 at Crawley is a massive boost for us.
"We had been playing well in the previous few games with the pressure on us, but we hadn't been getting the breaks.
"We looked good on Tuesday."
"It was great to win by four goals, although we could have done with a couple of the goals in the previous few games!
"It was a terrific effort from the team in what was a big game for us. Every single player put a shift in.
"We knew there were other games going on and we knew what we had to do.
"The main thing was to get off to a good start, which we did, and we built on that.
"We looked solid and it was a brilliant result to take into the last game."
A point will be enough for Town, although they could afford to lose as long as Altrincham fail to win their final game of the campaign away to Weymouth.
And they will face a Stevenage side that had its last hope of a play-off place removed with a 2-1 home defeat to Northwich on Tuesday night.
"It is all about us and always will be," said Kearney. "Whether Stevenage will take the foot off the gas, we don't know.
"We just have to do what we would have done anyway and get straight into them."
