Two women have had their handbags stolen in Huddersfield.

The first theft took place in Damside Road at 3.45am when a 19-year-old woman was approached by a man who asked for directions and a cigarette before snatching her handbag. The man ran off with the bag in the direction of the foot bridge.

The man is described as white, between 5ft 5ins and 5ft 7ins, slim, wearing a blue jumper and dark trousers. He spoke with a ‘local’ accent.

At 5.30am, a 53-year-old woman was walking along Somerset Road when a man grabbed at her bag. The victim and the man were involved in a struggle before he dragged her to the floor and released the handbag from her grip.

The man ran over the nearby allotments with the bag heading towards Wakefield Road. The woman had to go to hospital as a result of the incident.

The suspect is described as white, aged in his 20s, slim to medium build, with short, shaven mousey hair, wearing a blue v-neck jumper.

Officers are keeping an open mind as to whether these offences are linked due to the close proximity and similar descriptions.

Anyone who witnessed either of these incidents or believes they may have seen a man matching either of the descriptions is asked to call DC Nicola Keitch in the Kirklees Robbery Team on the non emergency number 101.
