Harrogate Railway 0 FC Halifax Town 1: Card mars Cup victory
RICHARD Marshall was sent off in the dying minutes of last night's 1-0 West Riding Cup win at Harrogate Railway.
The Town striker was shown a second yellow card - for handling the ball into the net - and now faces a one-week County FA suspension which is likely to kick in in a fortnight's time.
But while Shay boss Neil Aspin was unhappy that a key member of his squad had been shown a red card in the least important of the five knockout competitions the team are in, he believes his side can cope with Marshall's enforced absence.
"We have played 23 games and you might pick up a sending off in that time," said Aspin. "But to pick it up in the West Riding Cup is not ideal.
"You always have to be careful what you say about referees so I won't say a lot.
"But the game seems to have changed a lot from when I last played.
"We have enough players to cope with a suspension so we will just have to get on with it."
Despite the game being such a low key affair - just 87 watched - there were some positives for the Shay boss.
"It gave Jonathan Hedge a bit of practice because he hasn't had a lot to do in the last few games," said Aspin.
"Luke Richardson has not had a lot of football and we haven't had a chance to have a look at him.
"I thought he was very good. He was competitive and I liked his attitude in the game.
"James Riley missed Saturday's game because he was working but came back last night and did well.
"There were some plus points."
Aspin also played a full 90 minutes, although he has ruled out a more permanent comeback.
"I never set out to play any games because I have long since gone," he said.
"I just really wanted to play to give other players a bit of a rest - it is not a come back."
Aspin, meanwhile, has revealed that Paul Sykes has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a broken arm and is likely to be out for up to two more months.
He suffered the injury in the win at Lancaster City at the beginning of September and had been hoping to return in the next few days.
"We expected Paul Sykes to be all right by now but it has taken a bit longer than we thought," said Aspin.
"But we have coped without him and it might sound a bit harsh, but I am more concerned about the players who are fit and playing.
"He will come into contention when he is fit, but we can't worry about that at the moment.
"We have players who can do the job - an they are doing the job at the moment."
TOWN have announced several changes to their published fixture list.
The re-arranged games are: November 28 - Woodley Sports (h), December 12 December - Salford City (h), December 15 - Wakefield FC (h), January 26 - Woodley Sports (a), March 2 - Ossett Albion (h).
TOWN'S reward for their 5-0 thrashing of Shepshed Dynamo at the weekend is a trip to Unibond Premier Guiseley in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.
It will be the Shaymen's third away game in the competition having already been to Trafford as well.
The tie will be played at Nethermoor on Saturday, November 21.
