Dementia and care home lifelines in Brighouse and Rastrick

Major care home, specialist treatment and retirement village developments are underway to give a boost to the communities in Brighouse and Rastrick.

A specialist care development of 62 units of accomodation is being earmarked for a site off Bramston Street in Rastrick and is set to meet the needs of those with dementia.

The announcement comes on the back of new care home being constructed off Bracken Road and plans being passed for a retirement village on Parsonage Lane.

Councillor Daniel Sutherland, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Environment, said: “The Council is committed to increasing the choice of homes for older people in Calderdale, including a focus on supporting adults with dementia and their carers.

“Extra care housing helps people to maintain independence in their own home for longer, whilst enjoying a good quality of life.

“We are working with Home Group, a not-for-profit housing provider, to design an extra care scheme at Bramston Street, Rastrick for older people, and we are working with the Alzheimer’s Society to make sure it meets the needs of people with dementia.

“We were keen to ensure that the scheme would be in a sustainable location and part of the existing community.

A public consultation took place last December, where local people and organisations were able to see and comment on the draft plans.

“Home Group is aiming to submit a planning application this spring, and subject to approval it is expected that the scheme would welcome its first tenants in summer 2019.”

Construction work has begun on a multi-million development off Bracken Road for a 66-edroom care home being delivered by Henson Healthcare and is under construction by Marshall (Building Contractors) Ltd of Elland.

The Bridge House project is due to be complete in December 2017 with a view to opening the care home soon after.

Plans have also been given the go-ahead for a retirement village to be built off Parsonage Lane, just outside the town centre.

The scheme is being delivered by retirement home specialists McCarthy & Stone.
