A demonstration has been organised for Monday in Leeds against the decision to close the children’s heart unit at Leeds General Infirmary.
The charity Children’s Heart Surgery Fund has been campaigning to save the unit from closure and has organised a peaceful demonstration from noon at Millennium Square on Monday July 23.
Parents, patients, medical staff and MPs are encouraging people to join a demonstration march through Leeds City Centre to support the fight - after a decision was made earlier this month to close the unit.
The decision means Yorkshire would be left without a dedicated heart unit, so parents from Calderdale would have to travel to Newcastle or Liverpool for treatment in future.
The demonstration will end with speeches from local MPs and representatives from the charity and will be a chance for supporters to hear about upcoming plans to save the unit. Over 600,000 people signed a petition supporting the unit, which operates on hundreds of children every year.
