HEALTH staff have been helping more people to give up smoking in the region.

New figures released by the NHS Information Centre show 18,155 people in Yorkshire kicked the habit between April and September 2011 – an increase of 409 on the same period in 2010.

Director for public health for NHS North of England, Paul Johnstone, said: “This is fantastic news. If you are a smoker, giving up is the greatest single step you can take to improving your health.

“Stopping smoking is hard work and takes a lot of effort and willpower.”

A further 34,279 people in the region pledged to give up smoking between April and September last year by setting a date to quit with their NHS stop smoking service.
