A new GP practice in the former Ridings School at Halifax has welcomed its first patients.
The Meadow Dale Group Practice, run by Assura Leeds LLP, has opened in the former school on Nursery Lane, Ovenden.
Residents can register at the new surgery which offers extended weekend and evening opening hours - from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and from 8am to 1pm on Saturday. It also offers advice and support on living a healthy lifestyle, contraception and substance misuse support.
It is the second of three branches of the Meadow Dale Group Practice to open, after the first opened in Elland late last year and another will open soon in Sowerby Bridge.
Dr Ken McGechaen, a GP and chairman of Assura Leeds LLP, said: “We are delighted to welcome our first patients to the Meadow Dale Group Practice.
We are committed to providing patients in Calderdale with high quality, easy and convenient access to a GP or nurse and we are confident that the extended opening hours will make it easier for people to see a GP or nurse at a time more convenient to them.”
NHS Calderdale chairwoman Angela Monaghan said: “The new practice based at The Ridings will ease the pressure on existing GP practices and increase choice for patients.
It demonstrates our continuing commitment to improving primary care across Calderdale, which we know will improve the health and lives of local people.”
In 2008 Calderdale was identified by the Department of Health as one of the ‘least well’ served districts for GPs in the country.
During 2009 NHS Calderdale ran a consultation with more than 2,000 residents whose feedback was included in the design of the service.
