Smokers in Calderdale caught committing smoking-related offences such as littering will be given the chance to attend stop smoking sessions rather than pay a fine.
The scheme was passed by Calderdale Council’s Cabinet last night (Monday) and will make Calderdale the first local authority in England to back such measures.
Coun Janet Battye, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the council, told the meeting: “I would like to offer my full backing to this.
“It’s not an obligatory scheme, but it gives people who smoke a different choice.”
She added: “I’m really pleased the council is bringing this forward.”
