Tha campaign to ensure Calderdale Royal Hospital retains its A&E department is picking up pace.
The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust this week revealed the outcome of a strategic review and stated its ‘preferred option’ is a two hospital model for the area with Huddersfield Royal Infirmary being the sole provide of 24/7 accident and emergency - the overhaul would save around £50m a year.
Politicians, councillors and members of the public have all spoken out about the plans and vowed to fight for the A&E department to be retained at Calderdale Royal Hospital.
An online petition has been started at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/61484 and has already received more than 4,500 signatures.
Read more about the debate in today’s Courier including comments from Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker (Con) who said losin the A&E department could be positive for the overall provision of health services in Calderdale.

Debbie Briggs @HXCourier Glad to hear you will fight, Halifax A&E saved my daughter’s life, she wouldn’t have made it any further. Brow Side @BrowSide - An area the size of Calderdale NEEDS an A&E! People will die if it closes. Josh Fenton-Glynn @JoshFG - No one should have to travel from Todmorden to Huddersfield in an emergency this is a cut pretending to be a reform Jonnie ynWa @jonnie_w87 - You can’t put a price on people’s lives #caldernhs
Best77 @best77 - @HXCourier Does the time taken mean Ambulances from Upper Calder Valley have to go down Tuel Lane? That’s not going to work #caldernhs

I live in the Ovenden area of Halifax, and for me to get to Huddersfield it would be a bus ride on three separate buses. Not everyone is lucky to be a driver or have access to a car.
Mick Oxley - During its consultation over the planned closure, the team responsible must surely have considered the risks associated with longer ambulance journeys and one statistic they must have included would be the estimated number
