Overgate Hospice workers write book to help children

Karen Watters and Shirley Renwick have produced a free booked which highlights the various avenues of support available to children and parents affected by the death of somone close.

Karen said: “Recent research tells us it’s important to involve children where someone close to them is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

“Children need time to adjust to the news just as adults do.

“They need to be told sensitively but honestly, using age-approprate launguage and explanation and this resource book will help parents do that and direct both the parents and children to further information when the time is right.”

The book looks at each of the help available, looking at each one in turn, giving reviews, tips and information on resources such as websites, DVDs and support books - to help make the difficult conversations with chidlren a little easier.

The social work team at Overgate Hospice provide emotional, practical, financial and social support for service users as well as their families and carers, on a daily basis.

The team would like the book to help as many people as possible.

Anyone who would like a copy of the book can contact Overgate Hospice on 01422 379151 or email fundraising@overgatehospice.nhs.uk.
