Councils could face significant extra costs because of the Government’s failure to fully fund care for the elderly, according to Calderdale Council’s adult health and social care spokesman, Coun Bob Metcalfe.

“It is a great shame that the Government has not grasped the seriousness of this crisis and announced an early start to funding it using the £1.7 billion pounds underspend on the NHS budget,” said Coun Metcalfe (Lab, Town).

“Nationally and here in Calderdale, adult social care is now facing massive pressures from a growing elderly population, higher care costs and much less money to pay for that care - even though we are committed to prioritising adult care and have increased the budget further this year.”

The Government has promised a “Deferred Payment Scheme” to help those at risk of having to sell their homes to pay for residential care which he said was welcome but the full details of the scheme have still to be confirmed.
