Flood warnings were issued for the borough as the downpour fell on towns and villages, causing chaos on the roads as motorists battled against surface water flooding.

Sirens went off in Walsden, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, but major flooding was averted as flood wardens, residents, Calderdale Council, the Environment Agency and emergency services worked to fight the deluge.

Elphaborough Close, in Mytholmroyd, was badly hit in December but managed to stave off any damage to properties or vehicles in yesterday’s downpour.

Adrian Gill, flood risk manager, said: “We have been working with our contractors around the clock in Calderdale to inspect all our flood defences and assets as well as working with communities and partners.

“The sirens were used last night and we were impressed with the community response to this. The Mytholmroyd Flood Information Centre is open today from 11am until 4pm for any residents to drop in and ask questions.
