Residents and businesses in the town have been scrambling to keep the water at bay. Marcus Doyle and Warren Booth, owners of the Yorkshire Soap Company in Market Street, managed to keep out the water by chopping up sheets of laminate flooring and using them as a barrier, using silicone to seal the door closed.

Marcus said: “We have managed to keep the water out this time – the flood water would not have caused much damage this time, it’s been the idiots driving down the street at 40 to 50mph. All the shopkeepers were out, slowing down the traffic.

“The council came after about an hour to unblock the drains and Market Street is drying out now.”
