A huge backlash over plans to create a homeless hostel in West Vale will be hitting Calderdale planners.

The Ashley Foundation wants to develop a 32-room hostel at The Old Brassworks, Maude Street.

The council is accepting comments on the proposals until August 14 and ward councillors will insist the application goes before the planning committee.

The West Vale Action Group formed to fight the plans claims to have 1,500 supporters who have worries about a hostel in a residential area.

A Greetland and Stainland Ward Forum meeting has now urged objectors to write to the council with their concerns on planning grounds and already over 300 objections have been submitted.

Councillor Peter Wardhaugh told the meeting at St Andrew’s Church, Stainland, that the application was unsuitable due to its scale and a lack of amenities nearby.

The Vicar Rodney Chapman said hostels are important for released prisoners to help with rehabilitation.

“But, West Vale is not the right place and this could lead to additional problems,” he said.
