A WHIRLWIND on roller skates is set to hit Halifax.

Hot Wheel Roller Derby have announced their first public bout in Calderdale will be held at North Bridge Leisure Centre on October 30.

They will be pitted against Newcastle Rollergirls.

The team may also be taking part in Halifax Gala.

Roller derby is a fast and furious women’s contact sport that is seeing new teams springing up all over Britain.

Each team sends five skaters on at a time, consisting of blockers and a jammer.

The blockers set off round the track first, trying to knock each other out of the way to give their jammer the advantage.

The jammers set off on a second whistle, racing each other to get through the packs of blockers. Every time they lap the pack, they gain points.

Hot Wheel Roller Derby, who have several members from Calderdale, train on Sundays in Garforth, Leeds, and on Thursdays in Rothwell, Leeds.
