GREEN-FINGERED Aiden Halliday has cut the first sod for a garden in memory of his mum.

The eight-year-old from Siddal, Halifax, is taking a leading role in transforming a piece of land at his school, Siddal Primary.

His mum, Justine, lost her battle with breast cancer last May, aged 39.

She was a governor at the school where Aiden’s older sister Chelsea also went and younger sister Jessica is a pupil.

His dad, Mark, said he was overwhelmed when he heard about the idea.

“She would have been really pleased,” he said.

Money for the project has been raised through various activities at the school, including a sponsored silence, which collected £400.

The garden will include a growing area, a gazebo and story corner. The Justine Halliday memorial garden will also have a flower bed in tribute to teaching assistant Wendy Senior, who diedn last year.

Aiden’s sisters have both run the Race for Life in tribute to their mum.
