FIVE staff will lose their jobs on Christmas Eve when a town-centre bakery closes.
Parfitts Bakery is leaving Southgate, Halifax, after nearly 20 years’ trading.
Shop manager Sharon Clarke said staff had noticed a dip in trade and had been told of the impending closure several weeks ago.
“We’re not happy, but there’s not a lot we can do about it,” she said.
The Huddersfield-based firm has also shut a shop in Bradley and is left with eight still trading, including its Brighouse outlet.
Founder Christine Lesley Parfitt said trade had dropped and she blamed a lack of spending power and competition.
“We are upset at shutting shops but you can’t go on paying out when not enough is coming in,” she said. “Staff had an idea what was to come and we are all upset a couple of shops had to go to try and let the others go forward. If they are not viable outlets, you have to pull the reins in.”
