THOUSANDS of Calder-dale keep-fit fanatics got hot under the collar when Value Added Tax was raised.
The council began charging them twice for their monthly workouts.
It deducted fees from bank accounts with both 17 per cent and 20 per cent VAT.
Fortunately, the computer error was quickly spotted leaving only the council’s spokesman with a red face.
About 3,750 people who signed up for the Active Lifestyles membership were affected as bank payments were collected on February 1.
“A computer error resulted in members having their January 2011 payment deducted twice from their accounts,” said a Calderdale Council spokesman.
“We are really sorry this happened and we took immediate steps to ensure that the money was back in people’s accounts by Friday.
“We are taking steps to ensure that this doesn’t happen again,” he said. Active Lifestyle members who need further help or information should telephone the council on 01422 393270.
