TWO men who owe hundreds in unpaid fines have appeared in court.
Scott Roberts, 36, of Huddersfield Road, Halifax, was arrested after two warrants were issued for £290 owed since November 2011 and another £425 since January 2010.
He said: “I haven’t worked in that whole time. I am looking for a job and always thought I’d have a bit more time to pay it off. I just left it too long.”
Melvyn Smith, chairman of the bench, said: “We have looked at all the alternatives methods of getting you to pay what is owed. None of them is appropriate”.
Roberts was given a 28-day suspended sentence.
His fine was reduced to £250 and Roberts was told to start paying the money within 14 days.
David Brown, 21, owed £285 in compensation after interfering with a vehicle. His victim had been waiting since June 2010. Brown has only paid £15.
He told the court he had been made redundant last week before he was given a 14-day suspended sentence.
“There’s no way out if you don’t pay it,” said Mr Smith.
