Group look to grow interest in allotment

A green-fingered group are hoping to raise £150,000 to fund 24 new plots at an allotment in Sowerby Bridge.

Planning permission was given for the allotment earlier this month and gardeners in Calderdale are already planning on joining forces to bid for funding.

Rod Mellor, chairman of the Calderdale Allotments Association, said: “It’s brilliant news as there should be more plots in the area. There’s around £40,000 earmarked for it but we may need £150,000 for fencing, access routes and paths.

“The next step is to form a committee and then we can appeal for funding. I’ll also be contacting nearby schools as we’d like to get one on each allotment in the area.”

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for communities, Coun Pauline Nash, said: “More people are taking an interest in growing their own food and allotments are a great way of doing this.”

For more information about the new allotment, contact Calderdale Council’s Allotments Officer Pam Smithers on 01422 284401.
