Local Activities (LA) Group in Illingworth and Bradshaw offers social activities for older residents in North Halifax.

Regular classes and social meetings are designed to improve the health and wellbeing for over 50s living in the community.

The group runs various classes in Illingworth - at Illingworth Moor Methodist Church, Illingworth Fire Station community room and Whitehill Community Academy.

The church hosts Keep Fit, Line Dancing and New Age Kurling on Tuesday’s.

People enjoy chatting over knitting and crafts and express their creative side with art classes for all levels on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Illingworth Fire Station community room.

Tai Chi for all levels is held on Thursday’s in the Illingworth school hall.

Classes cost between £2 and £3 and the group has more than 100 members and new members are always welcome.

L A Group secretary Irene Mulhall says the classes are about learning new skills but, most importantly, passing the time of day in a pleasant way.

“Anyone can suffer from loneliness, even if you’re surrounded by a big family; they say you can be lonely in a crowd.

“Sometimes you need to get out and do your own thing.

“We offer a place for people to come and meet new people and we also put people in touch with other social events in the area - Illingworth Moor Methodist Church runs a charity and coffee shop on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays - it doesn’t just cater for people who want a bargain but is for those who just want to sit and have a cuppa and a chat.

“There’s always someone on hand to lend a listening ear and the church is becoming more aware of the importance of someone having someone to talk to.”

Chair of L A Group, Jean Butler, said: “The group is about fellowship and support for those who come.

“It brings the community together and keeps minds and bodies of our members active.”
