£15,000 boost for new 'town hall'

GRANTS worth £15,000 have been given to an organisation that hopes to turn Hebden Bridge Town Hall into a community centre.

The 10,000 from Hebden Bridge Rotary Club is likely to be used to create a kitchen so that much wider range of events and functions can be held there.

Another 5,000 from the Community Foundation for Calderdale will pay for tables, chairs and other furniture.

Trustees of the Hebden Bridge Community Association, which is overseeing the project, said they were delighted.

"This represents a tremendous step forward in the work we have been doing to breathe new life into the building," said Karen Houghton.

Negotiations with Calderdale Council about transferring the council offices into community ownership are now approaching the final stages.

The association will hold its first annual meeting on October 8 at 7.30pm to appoint more trustees and will hold a series of events in the building on the same day.

At least 450 people have become Friends of the Town Hall and members of the association.

Another trustee, Andrew Bibby, explained why the name of building, which used to be known as the council offices, was being changed to town hall.

"People associate council offices with drab modern office blocks and wonder why we're so keen about ours.

"We want the town hall in its new incarnation to be very much more than just a place where council services are delivered," he said.
