£250 fine for racist comments over bombings
A MAN has been fined by Calderdale magistrates for shouting racist comments about the London bombings.
David Lane (24), of Caldercroft, Elland, admitted being racially abusive in Halifax town centre on July 9. He was fined 250 and ordered to pay 43 costs.
Waseem Raja, prosecuting, told the court police officers on patrol in Halifax town centre stopped Lane after hearing him shout racist abuse.
He was asked to stop shouting and swearing. He referred to the London bombings and was told by police it was a sensitive issue, especially two days after the event, but he continued.
Lane said: "I'm sorry about my behaviour. I had a few too many to drink. I'd been working in London during the week and it got too much for me."
Bench chairman John Halliday said: "This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, especially in difficult times."
