£2.4m super centre is planned for Mixenden

PLANS have been unveiled for a gym, library, supermarket and post office in the centre of Mixenden.

The 2.4 million scheme could also incorporate a healthy living centre, a GP's surgery and a council contact point.

"People in this area have been putting up with the poor condition of shops and other facilities for years," said ward councillor Barry Collins (Lab).

"Money is tight at the moment but we must continue to look at ways of working with our partners to try to ensure that projects like this continue to move forward."

Calderdale Council Cabinet will discuss the scheme when it meets on Monday and it could decide to submit a planning application.

Pennine Housing 2000 has already been confirmed as the preferred developer, subject to a detailed agreement.

There are two options for the new building, either single or two storey, depending on exactly which services it is to accommodate.

But the more expensive option will require at least another 1 million investment.

The designs were produced following extensive consultation with residents between October 2008 and August 2009.

Meetings and special events were held to find out what facilities people wanted.

The site chosen for the new development in Mixenden Road was recently cleared of derelict and disused shops.
