£50m Calderdale College plan to get go-ahead
PLANS for a £50 million scheme to rebuild Calderdale College are set to get the go-ahead from councillors next week.
The development will see the existing college buildings on Francis Street, Halifax, knocked down and replaced by a new building over two to four stories.
A two-storey extension to the Creative and Construction Skills Centre building will be linked with the main college by a high-level walkway across Francis Street.
There will also be new sports pitches and car parking.
Sixteen residents signed a petition against the development, raising concerns about overcrowded parking, the loss of the view and noise pollution and disruption during the demolition and building work.
But in a report to go before Calderdale Council Planning Committee on Tuesday, development manager Richard Seaman says: "The proposed development would be a key tertiary educational facility for the whole of Calderdale.
"It is considered that the proposed development would represent a very significant investment in the future wellbeing of Calderdale."
He recommends granting planning permission.
The layout of existing college buildings is said to be inefficient and does not meet the future needs of the college.
The new development would provide outstanding facilities for science and technology, dance, sports and construction, and commercial-standard accommodation for students on hair and beauty, health and social care, and complementary therapy courses.
If planners approve the application it will pass to the regional and national Learning and Skills Councils for final approval.
Building work would then start at the end of April.
