£76,000 for this Gothic terrace
THE crumbling remains of a 19th-century terrace, valued at less than £30,000, has been sold at auction – for £76,000.
Calderdale Council will put the proceeds from Wainhouse Terrace, Halifax, towards the 350,000 needed for repairing nearby Wainhouse Tower.
The back-to-back houses built in the late 1800s by Edward Wainhouse were pulled down by the council in 1978.
All that remains is the basements and a 200ft ornate terrace with panoramic views of the Calder Valley.
But the Gothic-style listed structure cannot be dramatically altered and there is no vehicular access.
Under the terms of the sale, the new owner has three years to carry out still more repairs or the council will buy back the property.
