16 years old... and he's licensed to fly: The sky's the limit for Aidan

HE'S not yet old enough to drive a car, but Aidan Murphy is already a master of the skies.

At the age of just 16 the air cadet has completed his solo glider training – and has the certificate to prove it.

Aidan, of Clough Lane, Mixenden, Halifax, completed his glider pilot training at RAF Linton-On-Ouse in the Vale of York.

Aidan, a pupil at Sowerby Bridge High School said: "This has been the best moment of my Air Training Corps career and I have already applied for my flying scholarship."

He hopes to become an RAF transport pilot, flying troops, weapons and machinery all over the world.

If he gets the scholarship, Aidan could receive funding for up to 35 hours of training time.

Flight Lieutenant Phil Cowling, who commands 250 Halifax Squadron, said: "What Cadet Murphy has achieved is outstanding.

"Every cadet has an equal opportunity for this sponsored training.

"It just shows the belief that the RAF and the staff of the squadron have in young people."

For more information call 01422 350250 or visit squadron headquarters at Hunger Hill, Halifax, every Tuesday and Friday between 7pm and 9pm.

The Halifax squadron has been awarded 3,311 from the latest Big Lottery Fund's Awards for All programme.
