A really grand night for Hollie
A PROUD dad held a fund-raising night to raise awareness of his little girl's skin condition and raised £5,500.
Adam Shaw was hoping to reach 2,000 and was overwhelmed with people's generosity.
His three-year-old daughter, Hollie, is battling against epidermolysis bullosa, a rare and painful genetic condition that causes skin to blister at the slightest friction.
The money will go to DebRA, a charity that helps families affected by the condition.
It was raised during a dinner at Berties, Elland, attended by 155 people. Now Mr Shaw is planning a similar event for 2009. "It was a brilliant night.
"I underestimated people's generosity," said Mr Shaw, of Greetland.
An auction included a boxing glove from Ricky Hatton which fetched 750, and there was also signed memorabilia from singer Will Young and footballer Ian Wright.
Entertainment was provided by Halle Rock, a pop band of musicians from Man-chester's Halle Orchestra.
Mr Shaw said DebRA was close to finding a cure.
"It just needs that final push and human trials could be starting in a year's time," he said. "Hollie is coping well at the moment."
Sufferers with severe symptoms are likely to contract a fatal skin condition.
Last year Mr Shaw completed the London Triathlon 2007 and raised 1,500 for DebRA.
And that galvanised his wife, Leah, into action and she is running this year's London Marathon.
