Ah, so that's how it's done
YOUNGSTERS swapped maths for manicures and biology for bricklaying at a vocational skills taster day.
Almost a hundred school pupils from across Calderdale, Kirklees and Bradford tried their hand at skills ranging from plumbing to beauty therapy during the event at Calderdale College.
Year 10 and 11 pupils tried out construction skills including joinery, electrical, trowel trades and plumbing, as well as hairdressing, beauty, sport and public services, childcare, art and design and music technology.
Chris Eckersley, schools liaison officer at Calderdale College, said: "These were hands-on workshops where young people really got the chance to have a go themselves and where we could tell them about vocational pathways towards employment and higher education. Early entry on to this kind of training is hugely beneficial to some young people."
The college is now in its fifth year of a successful programme for 14-16-year-olds. The teenagers continue to study their key subjects at school but go into college for one or two days a week to train and qualify in vocational subjects.
There are more than 400 school pupils on the programme.
Chris said: "It has proved extremely effective at keeping young people in training beyond the school leaving age and getting them on to the first rung of their chosen career ladder."
The taster day was oversubscribed and two more events are planned next year on Saturday February 2 and Saturday April 19.
Sessions in health and social care, IT, business and performing arts will also be offered to 15 to 18-year-olds.
