Aim high is message to youngsters at four-day event

TEENAGERS from schools across Calderdale got out of the classroom and set their sights high with a day of inspiration and motivation.

About 400 youngsters took part in the Aimhigher Roadshow at the Elsie Whiteley Centre, Halifax.

Over the four days speakers including black history and culture specialist Andrew Mohammed, talked about higher education, the power of focus and a winning attitude.

He said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Aimhigher as I have observed first hand how it has inspired and changed so many young lives.

"Higher education turned my life around and I would love to do the same for others."

Dr Sue Bates, Aimhigher co-ordinator for Calderdale, said: "The aim of the Aimhigher Roadshow is to promote the benefits and dispel the myths about higher education and get young people thinking about their futures.

"As well as Andrew Mohammed, we had a session by trainer Steve Morris called Thinking for the Future which gave young people strategies to be able make informed and confident choices.

"Personal advisers from Calderdale and Kirklees Careers led a session focusing on helping students investigate which careers demand a degree and the effect that qualifications can have on salaries."

The students used the latest technology, including hand-held voting pads to answer questions and give their opinions about higher education at the touch of a button.
