Alex wields baton for choir... at just 18
A HALIFAX choir has a new conductor – and he's just 18 years old.
The plight of Halifax Chamber Choir was highlighted in the Courier when Daniel Bath resigned due to work commitments – leaving the choir without a leader.
But now teenager Alex Binns, of Rufford Villas, Savile Park, Halifax – recently appointed organ scholar at Windsor Castle – has come forward.
The Leeds Parish Church organ student will be directing the choir until September when he takes up his place at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
Despite his tender age, Alex already has experience of directing choirs through a 10-year association with Halifax Parish Church, first as a choirboy and then as an organ scholar.
Choir members said they were delighted at his appointment, even though he would only be with them a short while.
Two concerts are planned before Alex moves on – one of sacred music from Europe, at Carlton United Reformed Church on May 15, and a performance of songs from the 1930s at a garden party at Shibden Park on June 6.
The choir still needs new members and would welcome applications from experienced singers, particularly altos, tenors and basses.
It performs a wide range of music for small choirs, including early sacred and secular songs, Victorian part songs and classic 20th century show tunes, both on its own and with other groups.
It meets weekly during school terms on Tuesday evenings from 7.45pm to 9.30pm at The Crossley Heath School, Halifax.Singers interested in joining should contact Bernardine Chorley on 0794 1555370. An audition will be required.
