Alice's Run grows: 100 more take part in race in memory of student who fell from flat ledge
HUNDREDS of runners took part in a race in memory of Calderdale student Alice Redmond.
Alice's Run – now in its third year – saw 350 contestants follow the 10km cross-country route starting at Brearley Field, Mytholmroyd, and finishing at Calder High School.
The number competing was up 100 on last year. It is named after Alice, 21, from Blackshaw Head, who died in in 2005 when she slipped from a ledge while trying to help a friend into her flat.
Alice had worked for the charity Epilepsy Action during a placement year on her event-management course at Leeds University.
The charity now organises the run based on plans she completed during her course.
Alice's dad, Steve, said: "As a project she did a folder on how she would organise a race like this.
"Her work was used as the basis of organising this run and it has been very successful."
The winner was Owen Bielby, who completed the course in 36min 39sec. The first female finisher was Jess Reighly.
As well as the 10km race, there was also a one-mile trail for under-16s and a toddle round the school field for smaller children.
Roseanna Sale, from Epilepsy Action, said: "It's wonderful. It keeps growing year on year.
"It is an established race now and local running clubs have really picked it up. Everybody loves the course and the atmosphere is great.
Last year's run raised over 6,000 for Epilepsy Action.
