Angels delight at volunteers award: Fourth group to be honoured

HALIFAX Street Angels has become the fourth organisation in Calderdale to be awarded the Investing In Volunteers Award.

Volunteers from the group, a project of Churches Together in Halifax, have helped reduce crime in the town centre by 42 per cent.

The scheme, which has been running for three years, has recently expanded its Calderdale operation to Todmorden and is taking part in a national Christian Nightlife Iniative today.

The award honours the Street Angels as valued volunteers.

The year-long process involves interviews with volunteers, completing a quality standard document and input from an assessor.

Paul Blakey, Street Angels project manager, said: "Our 53 volunteers work every Friday and Saturday, between 9pm and 3am, in the town centre. Our work ranges from helping elderly people leaving the theatre to their cars to people who have had too much to drink or have been involved in fights.

"It's recognition for the hard work our volunteers do. Street Angels is an entirely volunteer led organisation and its great that we are investing in them."

The award was sponsored by 1,000 from Voluntary Action Calderdale.

The other organisations that have won the award are Homestart, Scope, and Smartmove, all Halifax.
