Art help for drug addicts
A SELF-help service for drug addicts and alcoholics is celebrating success.
The Basement Recovery Project, based at the YMCA, Halifax, has gone from strength to strength since it opened around six months ago.
Led by recovering addicts, the service aims to help people fight their addictions.
"The consensus is that the best person to help an addict is a former addict," said one of the volunteers Gail Hododryga.
She is leading art sessions as part of the project's programme which aims to provide a structured service of help for people trying to get clean.
Gail, who has battled a drug addiction to complete a HND in art at Todmorden Community College, said: "It's about encouraging social interaction, to get people talking as well as being able to express themselves through a creative medium."
There are currently 10 people going through the programme.
Gavin Morton, recovery facilitator has been employed to support the service five days a week.
He said as people progress, they start to take on more responsibilities and often become volunteers.
Steve Harding, who has been in the project for three weeks, said: "I used to stay at home and drink but this gets me out of the house and talking about the problem.
"I've never done any art before but I'm really enjoying Gail's sessions."
The project is appealing for art supplies so it can help more people.
Anyone who can help or wants more information about the service should call 01422 383063.
