Bank giant deals deal: Santander's £35m for Broad Street

A BANKING giant has stepped in to secure the future of the Broad Street Plaza development in a £35 million deal.

Santander and developers the Gregory Group have now agreed the terms of the property deal – one of the largest in Yorkshire since the start of the recession.

The Halifax scheme will create more than 400 jobs and give an 8 million boost to the economy.

Janet Battye, leader of Calderdale Council, welcomed the announcement as "great news" for the town.

She said: "I think it's an exciting development and brings a lot of opportunities to Halifax. Extending what is available in the town centre is good for everyone because if you bring more people in and keep people here then they're looking to spend money and participate in all sorts of things in the town. I believe it will encourage people to use what is here and for more people to come and see us."

The 50 million development, which will include a multiplex cinema, offices, hotel and restaurants, will generate more than 220 long-term jobs.

Around 200 construction jobs will also be created with Elland-based contractor Marshalls which began work in July.

Philip Hellawell, director of Calderdale Business Trust, said the scheme would be a valuable asset to Calderdale.

He said: "Investment will bring jobs, it will bring people into the town. We're competing with many towns in West Yorkshire and maybe further afield for people to do their shopping, so a greater variety of shops and leisure opportunities will bring more people in."

Town-centre businesses echoed his hope that the development will increase footfall and boost local trade.

Roger Harvey, of Harvey's department store, Commercial Street, said: "I'm very encouraged by it. We used to have five cinemas in town and it's great to get a cinema, certainly.

"It's a very good link between the town centre and Dean Clough and it shows things are happening in the town.

"I think it's a great benefit to the area and nice to see it actually starting. Hopefully the next thing will be the Piece Hall development."

Work is expected to be completed on Broad Street by the end of next year.
