Battle of the brass bands
MUSICIANS from across Calderdale will be aiming for the high notes at the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships this weekend.
There will be 60 bands split into five divisions performing at St George's Hall, Bradford.
The top championship section includes Black Dyke, of Queensbury, and Brighouse and Rastrick (B&R).
Black Dyke, the current National Champion Band of Great Britain, will be trying to steal the Yorkshire title away from current holders, Rothwell Temperance Band.
Both bands have already qualified to represent Yorkshire in the national championships at London's Royal Albert Hall in October. They will be joined by two other groups from the night.
Black Dyke spokesman Mike Shenton said Nicholas Childs, principal conductor and director of music, was celebrating his 10th year with Black Dyke and the band wanted to mark it with a win. He said: "It is a tough competition. Yorkshire is the toughest of the lot.
"There are a lot of good bands, including B&R and others."
Paul Beaumont, B&R spokesman, said: "The band is playing brilliantly but we have a tough job on our hands.
"We are putting forward our strongest set-up for years but it is well known the qualifiers in Yorkshire are the toughest in the country."
Bands from our region include Hebden Bridge and Yorkshire Co-op, Brighouse; Clifton and Lightcliffe and Elland;, Sowerby Bridge's Friendly Band; and Golcar's Huddersfield and Ripponden.
The winner and runner-ups will represent Yorkshire in the national championships in September.
Black Dyke will hold an open rehearsal at Morley Town Hall tonight (Thursday) at 7.30pm. Admission is free.
