Battle with cancer inspired Mandy to get fit: Now she's helping others follow suit

A BATTLE with cancer and a killer infection made Mandy Cameron realise she needed to get fit.

The 36-year-old of Eastwood Avenue, Illingworth, Halifax, lost five stone after her health traumas.

Now she is opening her own fitness lounge to help others like her.

"If I'd been fit at the time I would have been able to fight the infection better," she said. "There are also more dangers with carrying out operations on people who are overweight."

"I do feel a lot better about myself. I feel a lot fitter."

Mandy was only 24 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had to have an ovary removed. Then last year she suffered another scare when doctors discovered a cyst. Although it did not turn out to be cancer, she was in a lot of pain and had to undergo an emergency hysterectomy.

After the surgery she caught several infections, including the potentially deadly septicaemia.

"The doctors said I was seriously ill. If I'd waited for the appointment I had booked I would had died.

"I was very upset and scared. I knew I just had to get better.

"In hindsight I know that if I'd been fitter I would have been able to fight it better.

"After that I thought 'You've got to do something about being overweight'," she said.

"I wouldn't have been in that position if I wasn't overweight in the first place.

"I tried all sort of pills and potions. I tried slimming clubs but they just weren't for me."

Then Mandy started using a treadmill in her own home, and from only just being able to walk half a mile, she now runs three miles a day.

She has gone from 17 stone to 12 stone, and has become a trained fitness instructor.

Now she wants to help people like her who do not feel comfortable in traditional gym, and is opening The Tread Mill Fitness Lounge at Holmfield Mill in Holdsworth Road, Holmfield in Halifax.

"We have a one-to-one lounge where we invite clients to discuss their diet and lifestyle and address issues causing ill health," she said.

"There is also an activity and exercise area containing cardiovascular and resistance equipment, a separate free weight room and a Wii Fit lounge, for those not just ready to join a fitness program."
