Black Dyke Band's letter from Cambridge will be a secret for 100 years

BLACK Dyke Band has a letter from the University of Cambridge – but its contents will remain secret for 100 years.

The university is celebrating its 800th anniversary and wrote 800 "Letters to the Future" to selected organisations, which have now been securely stored in archives at the university library by Her Majesty the Queen.

A representative of the Queensbury band will be able to retrieve the letter on the 900th anniversary in 2109 by presenting a numbered certificate

The certificate was presented during a concert at Selby Abbey by Cynthia Lampert Moore, from Cambridge Univer-sity, to Nicholas J Childs, the band director of music.

Dr Lampert Moore said: "The letter for the future has been written to celebrate the university's great musical traditions, and what better organisation to link this special letter with than the world famous Black Dyke Band."

Dr Childs said the recognition underpinned the stature Black Dyke is held in the larger sphere as an organisation and as a leader in brass bands.

Black Dyke's latest success came in October when it won the 2009 National Brass Band Championship.
