Blaze drama at church hall

DOZENS of firefighters fought a blaze at a church community centre in Halifax yesterday (Sunday).

Six pumps were sent to St Mary's Church Community Centre, above, in Clarence Street, off Gibbet Street.

The fire was discovered by a woman who was opening the community centre at around 10.45 am.

Police and firefighters cordoned off Clarence Street and part of Gibbet Street for around three hours while they dealt with the fire and looked into the cause.

Investigations are still ongoing but police said they were not treating it as suspicious.

David Smith, the priest at St Mary's Church, said he was still waiting to discover how much damage had been caused.

The fire meant that the 1pm Polish Mass which usually takes place at the church and attracts around 200 people had to be moved to the Polish Catholic Association on Francis Street.

Klemens Proszowski, 18, said: "It's a shame this has happened, especially so near Easter."

Sergeant Warren Pittman said he wanted to thank the public for their co-operation and for respecting the cordon that had to be put up so they could investigate.

He said that had made the situation easier for police and firefighters to deal with.
