Boxing lessons providing knockout chance for college students
A KNOCKOUT idea is keeping college students and staff fit.
Weekly boxing lessons have started at Calderdale College with the chance to achieve bronze, silver and gold Amateur Boxing Association certificates.
The classes, which take place on Thursdays in the dance studio at the college's Princess Mary building, are being highlighted as part of the Courier's Join Our Club campaign.
We're encouraging readers to be more active and lead healthier lifestyles in 2009.
The sessions are being led by boxing coach Martin Rose who says anybody can take part.
"The awards course teaches the fundamentals of non-contact boxing," he said.
"It can help develop flexibility, co-ordination and teaches fitness, self-discipline and respect for yourself and others.
"Anyone who wants to move on to contact boxing will be encouraged to attend Halifax Amateur Boxing Club – a great venue with fantastic coaches. Boxing is a sport that anyone can enjoy."
Calderdale College sports development officer Craig Waterworth said the classes are already proving popular.
"Boxing is a great way to keep fit and it's something just a little bit different to keep people's interest and keep them on their toes."
